What We Do
In Her Place collaborate with designers, developers and councils to turn gender-sensitive theory and research around gender-sensitive design into practical and achievable solutions for the built environment. This can happen at all stages of a project, from using precedents and engagement to create a gender-inclusive design code at the outset of a masterplan, to being a critical friend and advisory support on detailed designs. Always with the goal of creating better places to live for everyone.

Our work is broad and includes transport and active travel, housing and the public realm, but with a particular focus on women’s and girls’ safety, engagement and more inclusive parks and public spaces.

In Her Place also collaborates with a wider team of gender-mainstreaming specialists in areas such as planning policy, lighting and engagement, to ensure that every project benefits from detailed expertise where required.

Our Projects
These are always bespoke for a client but can include:

-
Creating a research base to identify potential inclusion issues at the start of a project or for a local plan.
-
Developing a meaningful engagement strategy with a base in social value.
-
Co-production for inclusion.
-
Training for the design team and others in the practical implications of gender mainstreaming, with examples of good practice from both the UK and abroad.
-
Research projects where a need or opportunity has been identified.
-
Critical friend work on design codes, project design and more.
Our Story
In Her Place exists to make gender mainstreaming mainstream. We are working towards a built environment which takes the differing needs of women, girls and other marginalised genders into account at every stage, and where they are equal contributors to the process.

It has been set up by Susannah Walker, who co-founded the charity Make Space for Girls. There she worked on a wide range of research, campaigning and practical projects.

After four years at the charity, Susannah Walker realised that there was the need for an organisation which championed the needs of women and girls in the built environment across the board, from safer streets to better-designed housing and even bike sheds and so In Her Place came into being. It now works with a wide range of organisations on not just increasing the understanding of how gender affects what we build, but also on co-creating practical solutions to the issues faced by women and girls.

Prior to this, Susannah was a television producer and author, a background which enables In Her Place to create compelling reports and information for every project, to ensure that it has the maximum impact possible for its audience, whether that’s technical stakeholders or a more general public.
